# Is there an app to identify coins?

**Answer: yes.** Yes. CoinSnap and Coin ID Scanner identify coins from a photo, PCGS CoinFacts is a free US coin reference, and Change Checker covers UK coins. Treat any value or grade an app gives you as an estimate. (Source: [CoinSnap on the UK App Store](https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/coinsnap-coin-identifier/id1634551626))

Yes. CoinSnap and Coin ID Scanner identify coins from a photo, PCGS CoinFacts is a free US coin reference, and Change Checker covers UK coins. Treat any value or grade an app gives you as an estimate.

If coins aren't your only pile of small, oddly valuable things, the same sort of tool exists for trading cards. There's a whole page on [scanning Pokémon cards for value](/an-app-that-scans-pokemon-cards-for-value/), and it covers Collectr, TCGplayer, Ludex and PriceCharting, all free to download. You'll see which ones show a market price when you scan, and why that price is only an estimate from recent sales.

## The shortlist

### CoinSnap

A photo coin identifier from Next Vision Limited that gives a coin's name, origin, year, mint count, rarity and price estimates.

- Link: https://coinidentifierai.com/
- Free tier: yes. Its website says you can identify thousands of coins for free; the UK App Store lists a yearly Premium subscription with a 7 day trial.
- Paid from: not checked (not verified: UK App Store lists in-app purchases from £3.99 to £39.99 without saying what period each covers; the only period given is a yearly Premium with a 7 day trial)
- Best at: Identifying coins from around the world from one photo, with grading reports and collection tracking in the same app.
- The catch: The paid Premium tier unlocks all features, and its UK App Store listing gives two different database sizes (300,000+ and over 240,000 coin types).
- Platforms: ios, android
- Source: [CoinSnap on the UK App Store](https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/coinsnap-coin-identifier/id1634551626)

### Coin ID Scanner

A photo coin identifier and value checker with a catalogue of more than 187,000 coins (App Store), listed under DEXIO OYUN YAZILIM VE REKLAM GELISTIRME ANONIM SIRKETI, with the App Store copyright given to Ruslan Ivanov.

- Link: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/coin-id-scanner-value-checker/id6523429889
- Free tier: not verified. The listings say free with in-app purchases and offer a 3 day free trial; what stays free after it is not stated.
- Paid from: £9.99 per week (checked 2026-10-02 (UK App Store); £59.99 a year, with a £29.99 yearly sale price also listed)
- Best at: Browsing a world coin catalogue with filters by country, currency, metal and year, plus an AI Numismatist chat.
- The catch: Both store listings say it contains advertising, and the paid plans are weekly or yearly subscriptions after a 3 day free trial.
- Platforms: ios, android
- Source: [Coin ID Scanner on the UK App Store](https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/coin-id-scanner-value-checker/id6523429889)

### PCGS CoinFacts

PCGS's free US coin reference: values, populations, images and auction prices realised.

- Link: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts
- Free tier: yes. 100% free to use, per its UK App Store and Google Play listings.
- Paid from: not checked (free)
- Best at: Looking up US coins for free, and scanning the barcode on coins already graded by PCGS or NGC.
- The catch: US coins only, and it scans graded coin barcodes rather than recognising a loose coin from a photo. It needs an internet connection.
- Platforms: ios, android
- Source: [PCGS CoinFacts on the UK App Store](https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/pcgs-coinfacts-coin-collecting/id469265590)

### Change Checker

A UK coin collecting web app to find, identify, collect and swap UK coins.

- Link: https://www.changechecker.org/app.aspx
- Free tier: not verified. Login and register options are shown; no price for the web app is stated on the page.
- Paid from: not checked (not stated on Change Checker's app page)
- Best at: UK coins in your change, such as 50p coins, with a swap centre for collectors.
- The catch: The same page sells coins, and it is a web app you add to your home screen, not a store app.
- Platforms: web
- Source: [Change Checker web app](https://www.changechecker.org/app.aspx)

### Google Lens

Google's visual search from your camera, an image or a screenshot.

- Link: https://search.google/ways-to-search/lens/
- Free tier: not verified. No price stated on Google's Lens page.
- Paid from: not checked (not stated on Google's Lens page)
- Best at: A quick first look with nothing extra to install, in the Google app or Chrome.
- The catch: A general visual search tool; Google's Lens page does not mention coins or give any accuracy figures.
- Platforms: android, ios, chrome
- Source: [Google Lens](https://search.google/ways-to-search/lens/)

## How they compare

### If you want a photo ID for coins from anywhere
CoinSnap, from Next Vision Limited, identifies coins from around the world from one photo. It gives a coin's name, origin, issue year, mint count, rarity and price estimates, and it adds grading reports with estimated market values and collection tracking in the same app. Google Play shows 10m+ downloads, which tells you it is widely installed but says nothing about how accurate it is.

Then there is the paywall. Its website says you can identify thousands of coins for free, but the full feature set needs Premium. On the UK App Store that is sold as in-app purchases from £3.99 to £39.99, alongside a yearly Premium subscription with a 7 day trial, and the listing does not say what period each of those purchases covers. Check the period before you buy.

Coins are only one corner of the problem, and if you've got something older sitting in a drawer, the same question comes up again. We looked at whether a [website to identify antiques](/a-website-to-identify-antiques/) can do the job, and the answer is partly: photo search and identifier apps will suggest what an item is, but firmer values come from somewhere else.

### If you collect US coins
PCGS CoinFacts is PCGS's US coin reference, and its UK App Store and Google Play listings call it 100% free to use. It covers values, populations, images and auction prices realised for over 40,000 US coins by its UK App Store listing (Google Play says over 39,000), and it has a barcode lookup for coins already graded by PCGS or NGC.

What you give up is photo recognition. It scans graded coin barcodes rather than recognising a loose coin from a picture, it covers US coins only, and it needs an internet connection. For an ungraded coin from another country, it will not help.

### If you are checking UK change
Change Checker is a UK coin collecting web app, built to find, identify, collect and swap UK coins, and its page features 50p coins. It has a swap centre for collectors, which helps if you are filling gaps in a set.

It is a web app you add to your home screen rather than a store app. The page shows login and register options but does not state a price for the web app, so we cannot tell you what it costs, if anything.

### If you want to browse a catalogue by filters
Coin ID Scanner is a photo coin identifier and value checker. Its App Store developer is DEXIO OYUN YAZILIM VE REKLAM GELISTIRME ANONIM SIRKETI, while the copyright line names Ruslan Ivanov, so it is not clear who stands behind it. Its App Store listing describes a catalogue of more than 187,000 coins you can filter by country, collection, currency, metal and year, plus an AI Numismatist chat for questions.

The catch is ads and subscriptions. Both its store listings say it contains advertising, and the paid plans are weekly or yearly subscriptions after a 3 day free trial. The listings say it is free with in-app purchases, but what stays free after the trial is not stated.

### If you would rather not install a coin app
Google Lens is Google's visual search from your camera, an image or a screenshot, in the Google app or Chrome. There is nothing extra to install, so it works as a quick first look.

It is a general tool, though. Google's Lens page does not mention coins and gives no accuracy figures, and it names no price. You get convenience and give up anything coin-specific.

### When paying is worth it
For most lookups you do not need to pay straight away. PCGS CoinFacts is free, and CoinSnap's website says you can identify thousands of coins for free before Premium comes into it.

The plan to be careful with is Coin ID Scanner: £9.99 a week or £59.99 a year on the UK App Store, with a £29.99 yearly sale price also listed. A weekly plan left running costs far more than the yearly one, so if you do subscribe, know which period you have picked and when the trial ends.

## What to watch for

CoinSnap claims 99% recognition accuracy, but that is the developer's claim and neither it nor any other figure here has been independently tested. The same UK App Store listing also gives its database as both 300,000+ and over 240,000 coin types, so the listing contradicts itself.

Change Checker's app page also sells coins and collecting accessories, so it is a shop as well as a tool. That does not make the identification less useful, but it is worth knowing who is showing you what.

App values are estimates. CoinSnap and Coin ID Scanner show price estimates, and PCGS CoinFacts lists price guide values and auction prices for US coins, but none of that is an offer to buy your coin.

If you found the coin in the ground, GOV.UK says anything officially defined as treasure must be reported to your local Finds Liaison Officer within 14 days of finding it, and Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules. Not every old coin counts as treasure, but if yours might, that duty comes before any app's opinion.

## How we checked

On 2026-10-02 we read the UK App Store and Google Play listings for CoinSnap, Coin ID Scanner and PCGS CoinFacts, the CoinSnap website, the Change Checker web app page, Google's Lens page and the GOV.UK treasure page. Numista's site, the PCGS website and Coin ID Scanner's own site blocked us, so Numista is left out. Nothing was tested hands-on, so this is what those pages say.

## If none of these fit

If you have dug up an old coin in England or Wales, GOV.UK's treasure page says anything officially defined as treasure must be reported to your local Finds Liaison Officer within 14 days of finding it, and you can email the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme for more information. For a coin already in a PCGS or NGC holder, the barcode lookup in PCGS CoinFacts is free.
