Yes. Sudowrite, Novelcrafter and Squibler are built for novel writing and each lets you try it before paying, and a general assistant like Claude has a free plan too. Which one fits depends on what you're after.

## The shortlist

Ours: made by the same studio that runs this site.

### Sudowrite

AI writing tool aimed at novels and screenplays.

- Link: https://www.sudowrite.com/
- Free tier: yes. A free trial, no credit card required, per its pricing page.
- Paid from: $10 per month (Hobby & Student) (checked 2026-10-02; USD; the page has a monthly/yearly toggle and we could not confirm which billing period the $10 applies to or the monthly-billed price)
- Best at: Its Professional plan is described as best suited to longer projects like novels or screenplays, with developmental edits, line edits and beta reads.
- The catch: AI features stop working without a paid plan, though you keep access to what you wrote.
- Platforms: web

### Novelcrafter

Writing platform for novelists with a Codex for characters and locations plus AI help.

- Link: https://www.novelcrafter.com/
- Free tier: no. No permanent free plan; a 21-day trial with unrestricted access to all features.
- Paid from: $8 per month (Hobbyist, the cheapest plan with AI) (checked 2026-10-02; USD; Scribe is $4 per month without AI)
- Best at: Story organisation: the Codex tracks characters and places while you write.
- The catch: No permanent free plan, only a 21-day trial, and the cheapest plan (Scribe) has no AI features. From Hobbyist you bring your own AI key.
- Platforms: web

### Squibler

AI writing tool for novels and screenplays that helps with plot consistency and editing.

- Link: https://www.squibler.io/
- Free tier: yes. 1,000 AI credits a month, no time limit, test book or screenplay creation.
- Paid from: $15.83 per month (Plus, billed annually) (checked 2026-10-02; USD; $29.99 billed monthly)
- Best at: A free plan that does not expire, with 1,000 AI credits a month to test book creation.
- The catch: The free plan is for testing; full-length manuscripts, AI editing and PDF or DOCX export are on the paid Plus plan.
- Platforms: web

### Claude

General AI assistant for chatting, drafting and editing text.

- Link: https://claude.ai/
- Free tier: yes. Free plan: chat on web, desktop and mobile, with up to 5 projects, per its pricing page.
- Paid from: $17 per month (Pro, billed annually) (checked 2026-10-02; USD; $20 billed monthly)
- Best at: Free plan with Projects (up to 5) for keeping chapters and notes together as documents.
- The catch: It is a general assistant, not a manuscript tool: there is no built-in book structure, so you manage the chapters yourself.
- Platforms: web, desktop, ios, android

### ScriptGrain (ours)

Measures your writing style from your own samples and drafts new text in that voice.

- Link: https://scriptgrain.com/
- Free tier: yes. One voice profile, one writing analysis and one free draft, no card required.
- Paid from: £12 per month (Writer, 40 credits) (checked 2026-10-02; £115 a year billed annually)
- Best at: Drafting in your own measured voice, up to 15,000 words in one draft, with a free draft to try.
- The catch: One draft is capped at 15,000 words, so a whole book is built piece by piece. It is a drafting tool, not a manuscript organiser.

## How they compare

### If you want a free plan that doesn't expire
Squibler is the novel tool here with one. Its free plan gives you 1,000 AI credits a month with no time limit, for testing book or screenplay creation. Sudowrite and Novelcrafter give you a trial that ends, and ScriptGrain, which is ours, gives a single free draft.

The catch is that the free plan is for testing. Full-length manuscripts, AI editing and PDF or DOCX export all sit on the paid Plus plan. So you can get a feel for it, but you can't finish a book there for nothing.

### If you want to try it without a card
Sudowrite offers a free trial with no credit card required, and its Professional plan is described as best suited to longer projects like novels or screenplays, with developmental edits, line edits and beta reads. That is one of its paid plans.

What you give up is permanence. Without a paid plan, the AI features stop working, though you keep access to what you wrote.

### If you want help keeping the story organised
Novelcrafter is built around its Codex, which tracks characters and places while you write. A 21-day trial gives you unrestricted access to every feature, so you can test the lot.

There's no permanent free plan, though. And the cheapest paid plan, Scribe at $4 per month, has no AI features at all. From Hobbyist at $8 per month you bring your own AI key, which is extra setup.

### If you'd rather keep chapters as documents
Claude is a general assistant for chatting, drafting and editing, and the free plan includes up to 5 projects for keeping chapters and notes together. It runs on the web, on desktop and on iOS and Android. The novel tools here are web apps.

But it isn't a manuscript tool. There's no built-in book structure, so you manage the chapters yourself. You get flexibility, but you lose the scaffolding.

### If you want drafts in your own voice
Our own ScriptGrain measures your writing style from your own samples and drafts new text in that voice, up to 15,000 words in one draft. You get one voice profile, one writing analysis and one free draft, with no card needed.

A single draft is capped at 15,000 words, so a whole book gets built piece by piece. It's a drafting tool, not a manuscript organiser, so you'd pair it with something else for structure.

### When paying is worth it
Every choice here costs you something. A free plan that doesn't expire means testing only. Organisation means setup and no permanent free plan. Drafting in your own voice means piecework.

Paying makes the most sense when you've tested something and know it fits. Squibler's Plus is the clearest case: it adds full-length manuscripts, AI editing and PDF or DOCX export, and costs $15.83 per month billed annually or $29.99 billed monthly. If you're only exploring, the free plan lets you find out first.

## What to watch for

Three things are worth knowing before you commit to anything.

If you plan to publish on Amazon KDP, it asks you to tell it about AI-generated text, images or translations, even if you edited them afterwards. Content you wrote yourself, using AI only for editing, refinement or brainstorming, counts as AI-assisted and needs no disclosure.

Sudowrite's AI features stop working without a paid plan. You keep what you wrote, but the AI help ends.

And Novelcrafter has no permanent free plan, only the 21-day trial, so it makes sense to start the trial when you're ready to write.

## How we checked

On 2026-10-02 we read the pricing pages of Sudowrite, Novelcrafter, Squibler, Claude and our own ScriptGrain, the ScriptGrain home page, and Amazon KDP's content guidelines. Nothing was tested hands-on. ChatGPT's pricing page returned an error, so we left it out.

## If none of these fit

If you'd rather write it yourself, you can still use a chatbot as an outliner, editor and sounding board without letting it write the book. If you plan to sell on Amazon KDP, its guidelines say you must tell KDP about AI-generated text, images or translations. Content you wrote yourself and only edited or brainstormed with AI is called AI-assisted and needs no disclosure.

## Questions people ask
