- Paid from: £21.98 per month (Photoshop standalone, after a first-3-months offer of £9.98 per month; includes 25 monthly generative credits (checked 2026-10-02))
- Best at: Adding or removing content non-destructively from simple text prompts, on desktop, web and mobile.

## How they compare

Which one suits you depends on what you're trying to do, so here are the needs one at a time.

### If you want it free
Google Photos is the obvious one. Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur and Portrait Light are free for all users, and you get 10 Magic Editor saves a month on Android and iOS. That's a fair amount of AI editing for no money, and it lives in the app you may already use to store your pictures.

What you give up is room to grow. Beyond those 10 Magic Editor saves, you need a Pixel phone or a Premium Google One plan (2TB or more). These tools are in the Android and iOS apps.

### If you want no account
Pixlr is the easy one here. There's a free version with a core feature set, and per its homepage you don't need to pay or sign up. You open it in your browser and get going.

The catch is that the homepage lists ad-free editing, expanded AI credits and access to all models as premium features. So the free version is real, but you're getting the lighter end of it. Paid plans start at $1.99 a month, according to the homepage, but we didn't see the individual plan pages.

### If you sell products
Photoroom is built for exactly this. Background removal, retouching and batch editing are the point of it, so if you've got a pile of product shots to clean up, it's aimed squarely at you. It runs on web, iOS, Android and Mac.

The price of that focus is that it's made for e-commerce product photos, not general editing. Paid plans give a monthly pool of AI credits (Pro 8,000, Max 25,000) for the heavier AI features. Pro is €5.99 a month billed yearly, as it was shown to us in euros, so your local price may differ. The App Store lists it as free with in-app purchases, but we didn't see the exact free allowance.

### If you want to add or remove content from a text prompt
Adobe Photoshop's Generative Fill does this, and it does it non-destructively, from simple text prompts. You type what you want added or taken out, and it works across desktop, web and mobile.

You pay for it, though. There's no permanent free tier on the plans page, only a 7-day free trial on every individual plan. Adobe also lists limits of 40MB, 8,000 x 8,000 pixels and JPEG or PNG files, so a huge file or a different format won't go in.

### When paying is worth it
Photoshop is £21.98 a month on an annual plan billed monthly, after a first-3-months offer of £9.98 a month, and that includes 25 monthly generative credits. Paying makes sense when the free tools stop short of what you need, say you want to describe an edit in words and have it done in Photoshop. Otherwise, try the free options first.

## What to watch for

A few things to keep in mind before you commit. Google's announcement of the free Google Photos editing tools dates from 2024, so check the app for current limits. What was free then may have shifted.

Adobe says Generative Fill isn't available in China. If that's where you are, it's off the table, whatever the plan.

And we didn't see Photoroom's exact free allowance. The UK App Store lists it as free with in-app purchases from £4.99 to £249.99, which is a wide spread, so look at what you're buying before you tap anything.

## How we checked

On 2026-10-02 we read Adobe's Photoshop Generative Fill page and UK plans page, Google's 2024 announcement of its free Google Photos editing tools, the Pixlr homepage, Photoroom's pricing page, homepage and UK App Store listing, and the homepage of our own Product Photo Shots. Canva and Picsart were not included because their pages could not be read on the day. Nothing was tested hands-on.

## If none of these fit

If you only need product photos, Photoroom (above) is built for them. Our own Product Photo Shots is narrower still: it makes AI lifestyle product shots from one photo of your real product, from £19 for 3 shots. It's only for products you own or sell, and it does not handle well-known branded products. We left it out of the shortlist because it does not edit general photos.
